Podcast Standards: Post 3 - Heretics Rejoice! [IBNMA]

Need: A movement that podcasters can get behind to foster standards adoption!

Now that Paul Chaney, our illustrious IBNMA leader, has seen fit to elevate my status to that of a full-fledged “heretic” - I can now announce the Podcast Reformation! While I don’t plan on writing my own variant of the “95 Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences”, I do think that I have a role to play in bringing about a conscious movement on the need for standards in our industry. No question about it - I need tribal members to join the cause!

Podcast Standards: Post 2 - The Tool Chest [IBNMA]

Need: A selection of podcast publishing tools designed to promote and advance a common set of agreed upon standards.

Following on from my post last week - Podcast Standards: Post 1, our next step in solving this quandary of standards implementation in the podcast industry is that of publishing tools. Tools are critical in development and publishing scenarios of any podcast. It is my professional opinion though, the current selection of publishing tools, while good, are lacking in many areas.

Podcast Standards: Post 1 - Call to Action [IBNMA]

Need: Bring device manufacturers, software providers, and new media content creators together to formulate standards to improve consistency in the podcast experience.

One of the things that I advocated in my hands-on training at the recent 2008 New Media Expo is the need to have more consistent experiences within podcasting. It is my belief that device manufacturers, software providers, and new media content creators need to work together to ensure that standards are developed and implemented. As an example, standards such as common usage of primary XML tags….

Canon has released their newest DSLR the 5D Mark II. My jaw dropped when I saw the features. I was especially excited to see that it shoots HD, yeah that’s right HD Video from a still camera. I couldn’t help but think… hmm, could this be a reasonable option for podcasters, YES! Here is why…

0 to 60 in the News: Apple smartly revises iPhone NDA

Apple has smartly revised the iPhone NDA giving developers greater flexibility in development and sharing of resources. The community has been up in arms over many gaffes over the last few weeks as developers have been turned down over extremely controversial practices. Other developers are peeved about the fashion in which Apple has conducted business over all. The news is welcomed by all but developers are still wary of any last minute strings attached that could still be potentially bothersome as the community seeks greater freedom. Our Take: both sides need to come to the bargaining table and bridge any gasps that remain. The iPhone represents a quantum leap in functionality, usability, and creative expression for both developers and customers. One caution to developers though. Many developers are extremely immature as they seek to dictate their terms. Just remember who spent a small fortune on the R&D to bring us this device. Plus, while the app PodCaster should be allowed to see the light of day in the iTunes Store, we must also be aware of other variable that may inhibit Apple from doing so - namely bandwidth consumption on the AT&T network, etc. Just a thought -

0 to 60 in the News: iPhone App “PodCaster” sends heads spinning in Cupertino

The fact that Apple has now for the second time declined to approve the app “PodCaster” is truly an interesting and appalling chapter in the fortunes of a company that we have all come to respect for promoting podcasting. This latest chapter in smugness is really unbelievable to say the least. Podcasters everywhere are now scratching their heads as to why this small podcast app, among others, is stirring so much angst? Well Apple, the issue is that someone needed to create an app that you have yet to implement even though it has been widely asked for. The iTunes app on the iPhone/Touch should have had the option to subscribe to podcast subscriptions long ago but for some reason has been kept from the masses. Why? Now you decline to let a creative individual take up the slack for your negligence. Come on Apple! Wake up and see what is at stake here. We’re still in a forgiving mood. That can change quickly!

0 to 60 in the News: T-Mobile wisely scraps “soft cap” on G1 Android data usage

It goes without saying that too much data is not a good thing! Hey, Comcast, AT&T, and other ISP’s thinks so, too. Come on folks - this is crazy stuff we’re talking about here. Google, HTC, and T-Mobile create this really great phone and show all the cool things that it can do and then suggest that users throttle their appetite for viewing streaming video, google maps, music, apps, etc and expect them to be pleased. Oh, that’s so like a parent! It’s kinda like giving a teenager a Ferrari and stating that he can’t drive over 35 miles an hour - yikes. Once podcast options become available on the G1/Android, if in fact they do and they will undoubtedly, then it’ll be interesting to see how that so called “soft cap” plays out. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out the math on the downloads. It’ll be interesting indeed -

Microsoft Zune team revs Zune Software and device update to 3.0

Microsoft Zune team revs Zune Software and device update to 3.0 bringing new enhancements to users. ALthough treats abound podcasters will see little difference in the way the application performs its duties. There are a few subtle adjustments that have made their way into the software though which can have a less than desired affect on podcast developers. One item for discussion is the description field used in the in the Zune Marketplace when pondering subscription. The Zune team has made the

tag the default for the episode description when used which is not the proper description for the show. Moreover, the field does not properly format the tag data leaving the text as a blob! Never mind the fact that we need standards to ensure this and other like issues don’t occur, maybe we can begin to organize the issue on each of the players, iTunes included, and bring them to light for the rest of the community to put pressure on these folks to think of us before making rash update decisions. Just a thought.
